Position: Social Media Manager for Afternoon Express
Basic hours: 8:30am – 5:30pm Monday to Friday but will require flexible working hours. Will be required to be online during show broadcast on a Tuesday 6 – 7pm and Sunday 8:30 – 9:30am.
Location: Either Cape Town (Offices based in Westlake Business Park, Tokai) or remotely in Joburg (as show is now filmed in Johannesburg).
Remuneration: Basic salary
Job level: Mid-Level
Duration: Permanent contract but open to also freelance fixed term contract for the right candidate.

Cardova is an award winning media company based in Cape Town and Johannesburg which produces various advertiser funded television shows such as the Expresso Show, Afternoon Express, The Taste Master SA, My Design Rules and Tropika Island of Treasure. The shows are broadcast locally on SABC and Expresso is also broadcast internationally on The Africa Channel in the USA.
Job Description:
We are looking for a mid to senior level Social Media Manager to join the team for a production airing on S3. The production, Afternoon Express, is well established but has transformed from its original talk-show format to a lifestyle magazine show.
The successful candidate will be handling all digital and social media content for this show. It would be beneficial if the candidate had either managed social media campaigns for a TV show or had experience working for a media company.
The job will require you to work in the evening of the broadcast and may be required to work over weekends.
Broadcast times:
Main broadcast: Tuesday 6pm – 7pm on S3
Repeat broadcasts: Sunday at 8:30am
You will be responsible for crafting and managing the execution of various forms of digital content, including but not limited to social media, website, paid media, and be involved in the relationship and link between the social media strategy and the broadcast content. The role extends to include:
Duties and Responsibilities
Creating and executing content plans in line with the show’s strategy and tone
Creating and executing content plans incorporating sponsors messaging and key objectives
Creating and posting content filmed / photographed on set
Curate content to ensure a high standard of quality and relevance to users
Liaising with client and account managers addressing key queries around content – understand what kind of publicity is sought and how to get it
Driving engagement and conversations via engaging & shareable content with the community and ultimately establishing brand loyalty
Identifying tactical and relevant opportunities to engage – creating / tailoring exciting new content to the needs of the audience in the context of client product and or industry
Keeping up to date with the latest trends within the digital and social media landscape
Working closely with the Cardova Digital team to implement new strategies and ideas and drive positive sentiment for the brand across all Cardova platforms
Inputting into campaign ideas and creative brainstorming sessions
Reporting to clients on campaign performance
Managing the brand’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and website on a daily basis
Assisting with the publicity around the show content
Personal Skills/Attributes
Minimum 2 years of industry experience
Professional manner
Pride in work with attention to detail
Confident and comfortable directing clients, guests and presenters when needed for social media content
Ability to translate a creative concept into a clear content plan
Must be comfortable with writing in various styles and for multiple formats
Must have strong creative writing skills and the ability to write powerful and compelling copy.
Ability to adapt writing style to appeal to various target markets
Knowledge of additional South African languages will be advantageous
Active and well-rounded personal presence in social media, with an understanding of each platform and the best practices or examples of a brand’s social media platforms which you have actively been involved with growing and developing.

Basic editing skills to create Instagram reels, TikTok videos and Instagram / Facebook Stories
Well-developed sense of humour and enjoys being part of a team
